Cristian Cascante

Cristian is another member of the Cascante family that guides at Hacienda Baru. He was born and raised right here at the Refuge and went to the Dominical School through sixth grade.

His first job at Hacienda Baru was to help with the construction of the Guides Center and after than he worked maintaining the 7 KM of trails on the Refuge. He then became very involved with a Volunteer Program that we had at Hacienda Baru, it was his job to keep them on task.  It was from the volunteers that he learned his English. He fondly remembers one girl, Kate, who would give him 20 verbs to learn before dinner. If he couldn’t say them back to her exactly right, he didn’t get his dinner!

Cristian has now been guiding for 4 years, he guides the Rain Forest Experience, the Night in the Jungle and the Mangrove Walk. He especially loved the sloths and his favorite birds are the Chestnut-mandibled Toucan and the Fiery-billed Aracari. He finds the way his guests light up when he interprets the environment for them especially gratifying.

When he’s not in the canopy or on a trail Cristian likes to read about natural history, watch TV and listen to music.

Capuchin Capers

The troop of 26 monkeys was strung out over about 100 meters, moving through the forest. The lead monkey, a mature female, came to an area where the tree cover was broken by an open swamp with only a narrow corridor two trees wide going around it.
